Loving in truth, and fain in verse my love to show,
That she, dear she, might take some pleasure of my pain,
Pleasure might cause her read, reading might make her know,
Knowledge might pity win, and pity grace obtain,—
Sonnet 1, Sir Philip Sidney, lines 1-4
In this sonnet, it seems that Sidney is trying to obtain the affections of a women that seems to have little interest in him. Without it being stated, you can tell that she has a great pull on him for him to be able to endure the pain of rejection and still want her. He even wants her pity to feel like they are even in the same field which is kind of sad.
